Mental Illness Meets the Criminal Justice System: What are the solutions?

April 26, 2021- April 26, 2021

07:00 PM - 09:00 PM

Mh Panel

It is estimated that at least 1/3 of the individuals currently incarcerated in Michigan jails and prisons have a psychiatric condition. This is a sobering reality for many individuals with mental health conditions and their families/supporters who find themselves or their loved ones facing incarceration for crimes committed during the throes of uncontrolled symptoms of mental illness. This virtual community roundtable includes those who are working to address this problem and who have personally dealt with this long-standing mental health policy issue. We will ask the critical questions: Why are there so many individuals with mental health conditions incarcerated? What are the solutions? Why is it taking so long to address a problem that has been occurring since the late 1980’s?
