Parity Bills Introduced
Mental health insurance parity bills for the 2009-10 legislative session have been introduced in the State House. They are House Bills 4597-4600. The chief sponsors are: Rebekkah Warren (D-Ann Arbor); Tom Pearce (R-Rockford); Bert Johnson (D-Highland Park); and Pam Byrnes (D-Chelsea). Each of the four bills has over 40 co-sponsors. The bills have been referred to the House Health Policy Committee, chaired by Marc Corriveau (D-Northville).
Despite last December's national parity law from Congress, Michigan still needs to join the other 42 states that have enacted parity legislation. The new Congressional law exempts all employers with less than 51 employees, meaning some two million otherwise privately insured state residents will not have equal protection for mental health when the Congressional act takes effect in early 2010.
